Turkey Control Tips: How To Keep Turkeys Out

Australian brushturkeys are becoming an increasingly common sight in suburban gardens, especially in areas close to forests and bushlands. While they are a part of our unique wildlife, their presence can be frustrating as they often destroy gardens, uproot vegetable patches, and scatter leaves and debris across lawns and pathways. Given their protected status in Australia, dealing with these pesky visitors can be challenging. Here are some practical tips to keep turkeys out of your garden without harming them.

Remove Attractive Materials

Brush turkeys are attracted to gardens that provide materials for building their large, mound-like nests. These mounds are primarily constructed from composting material, mulch, and leaf litter. To make your garden less inviting, ensure that all compost piles are covered or enclosed and that garden waste is cleared up promptly. By removing these materials, you remove the primary incentive for a turkey to settle in your garden.

Modify the Landscape

If you find a turkey starting to build a nest in your garden, act quickly. Covering the ground around the nest with chicken wire can effectively deter the turkey from continuing its construction. This makes it difficult for the turkey to gather and arrange the material for the mound. Alternatively, consider fencing off the area around the nest entirely, making it inaccessible and encouraging the turkey to seek a better spot elsewhere.

Consider Relocation

Sometimes, the best solution for a persistent turkey problem is relocation. This should be done carefully to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the turkeys, which can grow quite large. Trapping is a humane option if done correctly. Traps with mirrors are particularly effective, as the turkeys see their reflection and, mistaking it for a rival, enter the trap to defend their territory. Once safely captured, turkeys can be relocated to a more suitable environment, ideally more than 25 kilometres away from your home.
